Cleaning up your gutter behaviour

Do you really need to have your gutters cleaned regularly? How often should you have the gutters cleaned on your Melbourne home? Is it a job that you can do? Is there a way of not having to clean your gutters regularly?

For the answers to these and other gutter cleaning questions, read on. You might be surprised with the answers!

A short word on gutters

The gutters of your Melbourne home are hard workers. They form an important part of your home’s water drainage system. Without them you would be likely to have flooded areas on the ground underneath your roofline, would get drenched leaving or entering your home when it rained, and would eventually have water damage to repair to your home.

All the rainwater that lands on your roof is funnelled down to your gutters, into your downpipes and eventually into the stormwater drains. When this system works perfectly you don’t need to give it a second thought, but when it doesn’t it’s a hassle and potentially a very expensive issue.

Do you need to have the gutters of your Melbourne home cleaned?

This is a pretty easy question to respond to, because the simple answer is yes.

A common source of issues with roofing – including roof leaks, and rusted gutters and downpipes – is simply that the gutters haven’t been cleaned. If leaves, mud, weeds and other debris are allowed to accumulate in your gutters, your gutters or downpipes can flood and overflow, and they won’t disperse rainwater effectively. Eventually it will cause damage.

Then, something that you may have been able to do yourself in 30 minutes or so, or pay someone a few dollars to fix, could end up costing you lots of money.

How often should you have your gutters cleaned?

We can’t be as definitive with this answer because it can depend on a few factors:

  • If your home is surrounded by trees and tall shrubs – common sources of debris that end up in your gutters – then you may need to clean your gutters more regularly. On the other hand, if you don’t have trees and shrubs close by you may be able to make gutter cleaning on your Melbourne home a less regular job.
  • Some gutters and downpipes are large, while some are small, which can affect how regularly they should be cleaned.
  • If you live in a windy area, chances are you’ll get more debris in your gutters.

As a general rule, Oates Roofing Maintenance recommends having your gutters cleaned twice a year. The best times are in autumn, after any deciduous leaves have fallen from surrounding trees, and spring, to clear away any debris accumulated by winter storms and rain.

Can you clean your gutters yourself?

If you have a sturdy ladder and 30 minutes or an hour to spare you can clean your own gutters. But that doesn’t mean you should, or you have the time or desire.

Working from heights isn’t everyone’s cup of tea and does come with risks. In addition, you can damage your hands relatively easily and potentially damage your roofs, gutters or downpipes if you’re not careful or know what you’re doing.

As well as getting the job done correctly and safely, when you get Oates Roofing Maintenance to clean your gutters we’ll also be able to detect any issues and help you get them fixed (see below).

Is there a way to reduce or eliminate the need for gutter cleaning?

Yes there is. There are a number of gutter guard systems you can buy and have installed, but it’s fair to say that some of the cheaper systems are more of a pain than a help.

We recommend installing mesh gutter guards. When professionally installed, they’ll divert the majority of leaves, sticks and other debris from your gutters to the ground. It’s not a cheap investment, but they do provide peace of mind. Plus, over time, then can save you money and are likely to pay for themselves.
